I am a single parent and I work paycheck to paycheck as well. I make sure my pay is direct deposited and I pay my bills (most) on a weekly rather than monthly schedule with automatic bank account withdrawls. As long as I make sure I work enough hours so there is enough money in the account to cover the payments and buy gas & groceries, I'm O.K. As for "entertainment expenses" sometimes there is money to do things and most of the time there isn't. We find things to do that don't cost anything or cost very little. We don't eat out often, and my parents help with things like music lessons and babysitting during school vacations. Its hard but If you are careful to live within your means and save a little for the expected (holidays, birthdays) and unexpected (car & home repairs). You can make it work. Your friend does not want a handout because it makes her feel poor, and she doesn't want you to feel sorry for her. Maybe offer her a job of sorts, babysitting or cleaning your house while you run errands (even if you just sit in the park and read.) Then she can at least feel like there was an even exchange.

Budget is just a word for knowing how much you need to survive and making sure you earn it. If you have unlimited income then I guess the word doesn't apply to you.
References :
I had great success with this book, they make it very easy to set up a reasonable budget, and also have a whole section dedicated to people who don't have steady incomes.

Family budgets................................................................................................
My family and I are blessed in we do not have to worry about finicial issues. I have a very good friend who is not so blessed and lives paycheck to paycheck and often has to miss some payments to pay other bills (ive offered to help her but she refuses) She will say things to me like "I should make a budget" my question is HOW do people make and stick to a budget? Like my friend she is not salaried she is paid hourly so as her hours change so does her pay. How can someone budget everything and "stick" to one not knowing what their pay will be next or unexpected expenses. Even routine household expenses. I know my electric/gas/water/grocery bill/gas for all the cars fluates monthly. Also if you have children how do you budget their "entertainment" and needs in? This is a serious question Im very courious how single income/duel income families "budget" and stick to it

Thank you all in advance for educating me about this.
To mom of 4, to answer your question my family have been successful business owners as well as land owners which oil was found on. So thats where our money comes from. My husband also owns one of the most successful construction/remodeling companies in our tri-state region.

Also if any of you can answer this. When I offer my friend money I do NOT expect her to hurry and pay me back (I wouldnt care if she ever paid me back) I am not giving it to her because I "feel sorry" for her I want to give it to her because she's my best friend and has been since Jr HS shes my childrens godmother and I am her childrens godmother is that not what Im supposed to do help her when she needs it?
